The San Marco Bioenergie company owns the solid biomass thermoelectric power plant of Bando d'Argenta (Ferrara) which is active in the energy valorization of woody biomass deriving from forest maintenance activities, cleaning of river beds, use of agricultural residues and of urban greenery. The plant has an installed capacity of 21 MW of electricity, among the largest operating in Italy. Given the variability of solid biofuels used in the plant, the company has long been dealing with the issue of quality determination. In particular, an important issue is the determination of the moisture content, a parameter that conditions the energy content of the fuel biomass. The variability of the moisture content is very high over time and from the origin, especially in the wood chips of forest origin. Monitoring this parameter requires an important effort to guarantee the representativeness of biomass measurements and monitoring. Currently the humidity analysis method is based on drying the biomass in a thermoventilated oven at 105 ° C for about 24 hours. This procedure is therefore characterized by long periods of time, the need to dedicate time to sample preparation and adequate personnel which therefore entails a significant increase in costs. To address this problem, the Biomass Laboratory of the Polytechnic University of Marche has been proposing a faster and cheaper methodology: infrared spectroscopy (NIR). This type of analysis - characterized by the non-destructive nature of the sample - is based on the interaction between matter and electromagnetic radiation, with a wavelength between 0.75-2.5 μm. The NIRS tools - which perform qualitative and quantitative analysis - also have the advantage of returning quick answers (a few seconds) and being able to be implemented in portable or line devices, as well as representing traditional laboratory bench machines. Given the premise that the technique exists with NIR spectroscopy, the aim set by this thesis is to verify whether the NIR method presents compatible performances, comparable and similar to those offered by the traditional method. Specifically, we wanted to test the performance of the Micro-NIR already used by the biomass laboratory under this theme by applying it directly at the San Marco Bioenergie power plant in Bando dArgenta. We have therefore undertaken to carry out a work program applied to the comparison on the different procedures for measuring the quality of solid biomass to effectively verify the performance of this analytical solution in comparison with the traditional method. Within the document, after an introduction on the panorama of biomasses for energy use and on the technique of NIR spectroscopy, the materials and methods of work are presented, the results and the consequent final conclusions.
