This thesis was drafted during the research internship, which in agreement with the supervisor will deal with a topic, which still today is not fully implemented within companies. Already from the title "Design and analysis of automated warehouses", it is clear how the attention of the report is placed on a possible implementation of technologies within an activity, which today still generates many doubts about the actual efficiency and sustainability of the business of a service of this kind for a company. The purpose of the report is therefore to analyze various business situations and then verify the actual usefulness of a possible implementation of automation in the various activities. The first part defines fairly general information on the concept of warehouse, which shows the main functions and costs that the company has to bear, and then moves on to the classification of the various warehouses, and then concludes with the introduction to automation by means of WMS systems. In the second part, on the other hand, it goes more into practice, in fact the attention is first placed on the effective management of stocks by means of models such as EOQ and EOI, and then continues with the definition of the main performance indices that allow to evaluate the warehouse business in an effective way, useful to understand if necessary to implement some type of service, which allows the automation of the process, and therefore indirectly improve the effectiveness of the activities carried out. The final part deals mainly with the "picking" activity, which are fundamental within a warehouse. The main types of shelving that allow an effective "Refilling" will then be listed, then the concept of "Picking" is explained, in which the automation implementation process could bring a lot of advantage to a company.

Abstract

Design and analysis of automated warehouses
