Chondrosia reniformis Nardo, 1847 is a sponge typical of the Mediterranean Sea essential for our seas as a filtering organism. It is in fact capable of filtering 900 times its body volume in 1 hour of time. In recent years, interest in this species has focused above all on the extraction of its fundamental component: collagen, a protein used in numerous industries and with a constantly growing market. However, the economic interest has brought out regenerative capacities that have been further investigated in this study. In particular, the times and methods of regeneration of the sponge were analysed, both with macroscopic monitoring with the aid of the stereomicroscope and with a histological approach with HE-EE and Masson's Trichrome. The maximum observation time was 20 days, during which different treatments were tested on the 29 fragments analysed. The results obtained show that the structure of the sponge reorganizes following fragmentation, that the ectosome acts as a barrier limiting the fusion between the fragments and that a high production of spherulose cells is involved in the processes of regeneration and/or production of collagen. Finally, calculating the regeneration rate, a 3cm2 sponge would have a regeneration rate of 42cm2 in one year, but taking into account the growth rates of Di Camillo and Cerrano (2015) of 10cm2 per year, a 30cm2 sponge deprived of his half would take a year and a half to fully regenerate. This aspect should be considered to plan a sustainable harvest in a sea sponge farm. In conclusion, although there is a need to implement the study with more sophisticated techniques for a more in-depth investigation, promising results have been achieved regarding regeneration mechanisms and times during fusion.
