Introduction: The literature agrees in defining the adoption of tools capable of outlining and evaluating the nurse's skills as essential. The competency portfolio is a tool that can identify the necessary skills, capabilities and abilities of the professional, and enable the realization of a defined framework of the competencies required of the nurse in the specific sector in which he’s placed, through the mapping of them. It can be used as an assessment tool. Aim: The creation of a portfolio of competencies of the nurse who works in emergency ward. Methods: A review of the literature was carried out to create a model for mapping the skills of the nurse working in the emergency ward. Based on the model created, an interview was realized with 23 nurses from the U.O. Emergency Ward and Emergency Medicine of the Macerata hospital for the creation of the portfolio, with a self-assessment survey and definition of skills acquisition times. Results: The results of the survey on the self-assessment of competencies were good with an average value of 3.48; technical-professional skills received the highest ratings. Transversal skills showed the longest acquisition times, 5 months on average, followed by technical-professional skills, 3 months, and basic skills, to be mastered at the start of the job. The skills that are more complex, with over 6 months of training, are those relating to the management of hospital emergencies, maxi-emergencies and triage. Conclusions: The skills portfolio is able to outline the skills required for a specific figure and, through an evaluation process, to highlight strengths, gaps and areas for improvement, developing greater awareness in the professional himself and in the company.
