In this paper, in the first part, an accurate description regarding autism spectrum disorder is developed. A brief analysis has been made below which aims to examine the effectiveness of Italian health services in addressing the challenges related to the autism spectrum. Through a multidisciplinary analysis, we explore the policies, programs and resources dedicated to early diagnosis, therapeutic intervention and social integration of autistic people. It is clear that there are more obstacles to accessing and using health services and in particular oral care services. The lack of education and training of professionals represents one of the main obstacles due to the lack of awareness of the importance of oral health for people with disabilities. Precisely for this reason, current knowledge regarding special dentistry and in particular patients with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is summarized, in order to offer future researchers and professionals different clinical approaches that they can apply in their clinical practice. As an example, the working reality of surgical and special odontostomatology at the University Hospital of the Marche is reported, comparing it with the private reality.
