In the last twenty years the study of soil and root's system have received an increasing attention from reasearchers, thanks to: the introduction of new techniques for monitoring and studying development of root's system; the need to understand the relations whitin rhizosphere ; understand the influence of biotic and abitotic factors on root's growth; get to know the chemical basis of the interactions between soil and roots (Ephrath et al., 2020). There are several research programs aimed at improving the productivity of olive trees, and improving the quality of the fruit produced. Numerous works focus on the study of the canopy, directly observable, overlooking the root's system. But the development of the latter is directly correlated with the development of canopy, and the study of one cannot be separated from the other (Zucconi, 2003). Checked the growing interest in high-density olivicolture in Italy and in other olive-growing countries, as an alternative to traditional olive groves, in addition to the growing sensitivity of the scientific world towards safeguarding the soil resource from problems such as erosion and pollution, this thesis, structured in two parts, has the following objectives: in the first part to review a series of techniques for soil management in the inter-row and in the tree row of high-density olive groves, discussing the main problems related to use of one or the other technique; in the experimental part, the goal is to study the variation in the root density of the olive tree, with the different sub-row management techniques. The ultimate aim is to search for valid alternatives to traditional soil management techniques, which can improve the development of the root system (which is consequently reflected on the development of the canopies), and at the same time are able to reduce the problems associated with the exploitation of the soil for production purposes.
Negli ultimi venti anni lo studio del suolo e della radice hanno ricevuto una crescente attenzione da parte dei ricercatori, grazie: all’introduzione di nuove tecniche per il monitoraggio e per lo studio dello sviluppo dell’apparato radicale; alla necessità di comprendere le relazioni all’interno della rizosfera; comprendere l’influenza dei fattori biotici ed abiotici sulla crescita della radice; arrivare a conoscere le basi chimiche dell’interazione tra suolo e radici (Ephrath et al., 2020). Diversi sono i programmi di ricerca indirizzati al miglioramento della produttività delle piante di olivo, ed al miglioramento della qualità dei frutti prodotti. Numerosi lavori si concentrano sullo studio della porzione aerea della pianta, direttamente osservabile, trascurando quella radicale. Ma lo sviluppo di quest’ultima è direttamente correlato con quello della porzione aerea, e lo studio dell’una non può prescindere dall’altra (Zucconi, 2003). Visto il crescente interesse rivolto verso l’olivicoltura ad alta densità in Italia e negli altri Paesi a vocazione olivicola, come alternativa agli impianti olivicoli tradizionali, oltre alla crescente sensibilità del mondo scientifico verso la salvaguardia della risorsa suolo da problemi quali erosione ed inquinamento; la presente tesi, stutturata in due parti, si pone i seguenti obiettivi: nella prima parte di passare in rassegna una serie di tecniche per la gestione del suolo nell’interfilare e nel sottofila di oliveti ad alta densità, discutendo delle principali problematiche connesse all’impiego dell’una o dell’altra tecnica; nella parte sperimentale l’obiettivo è di studiare la variazione della densità radicale dell’olivo, con le differenti tecniche di gestione del sottofila. Il fine ultimo è quello di ricercare valide alternative alle tecniche di gestione del suolo tradizionali, che possano migliorare lo sviluppo dell’apparato radicale (che si riflette di conseguenza sulla porzione aerea), ed allo stesso tempo siano in grado di ridurre le problematiche connesse allo sfruttamento del suolo a fini produttivi
