Chronic degenerative diseases (NCDs), such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, cancer, and chronic respiratory diseases, are now the leading cause of death globally and constitute a significant health, social, and economic problem, including in Italy. The growing incidence of these diseases is strongly linked to modifiable risk factors, such as unhealthy lifestyles, particularly poor nutrition. In light of scientific evidence and epidemiological data, this thesis explores the strategic role of nutrition education as a primary prevention tool, with a particular focus on the Mediterranean diet model. The thesis analyzes the main types of prevention, the economic impact of NCDs on the national health system, and the potential return on investment in prevention. Through an integrated and multidisciplinary approach, it highlights the importance of promoting targeted educational interventions, aimed also at young people, to encourage informed food choices and healthy lifestyles.
Le malattie cronico-degenerative (NCDs), come le patologie cardiovascolari, il diabete, il cancro e le malattie respiratorie croniche, rappresentano oggi la principale causa di morte a livello globale e costituiscono un rilevante problema sanitario, sociale ed economico, anche in Italia. La crescente incidenza di queste patologie è fortemente legata a fattori di rischio modificabili, come stili di vita scorretti, in particolare una cattiva alimentazione. Alla luce delle evidenze scientifiche e dei dati epidemiologici, questa tesi approfondisce il ruolo strategico dell’educazione alimentare come strumento di prevenzione primaria, con un focus particolare sul modello della Dieta Mediterranea. L’elaborato analizza le principali tipologie di prevenzione, l'impatto economico delle NCDs sul sistema sanitario nazionale e il potenziale ritorno dell’investimento in prevenzione. Attraverso un approccio integrato e multidisciplinare, viene evidenziata l’importanza di promuovere interventi educativi mirati, rivolti anche ai più giovani, per favorire scelte alimentari consapevoli e stili di vita salutari.
