Tourism represents the main driver of development for many Alpine regions, contributing to economic growth, employment, and the enhancement of local resources. However, the evolution of tourism demand, characterized by increasingly informed and demanding tourists, the intensification of competition among destinations, and the growing challenges related to environmental sustainability require tourism destinations to adopt and develop increasingly effective and innovative management strategies. This thesis analyzes the role of Destination Management in the competitive development of Alpine tourist destinations, with particular reference to the case of Plan de Corones (Kronplatz), one of the most significant tourism destinations in South Tyrol. The aim of the research is to understand which strategies and action plans have contributed to the destination's success and how they can support the maintenance of its competitive positioning in the long term. After an initial analysis of the South Tyrolean tourism context, characterized by high tourist flows, a high-quality accommodation supply, and a highly integrated organizational model, the study explores the main theoretical concepts related to tourist destinations, Destination Management, Destination Marketing, territorial governance, and the principal destination management tools and strategies. Subsequently, through the analysis of the Plan de Corones case study, the main factors behind its success are examined, including cooperation between public and private stakeholders, the development of a strong territorial brand, investments in innovation and digitalization, and the growing focus on environmental and social sustainability. Supported by an online sentiment analysis and the development of a SWOT matrix, the study highlights how the destination's competitive advantage derives not only from its natural resources but, above all, from its ability to effectively coordinate local stakeholders and develop a comprehensive and integrated tourism offering. Nevertheless, the research also identifies certain limitations of the adopted business model in light of the increasingly significant challenges facing the destination, such as climate change and overtourism. The research findings show that the strategic management and competitive development of Alpine destinations increasingly depend on their ability to reconcile competitiveness and sustainability. This requires a focus on qualitative rather than quantitative growth, achieving a delicate balance between tourism flows, territorial preservation, and adaptation to environmental and social changes.
