Introduction Clinical internships are a central component of nursing education, but to translate experience into meaningful learning a structured reflective process is required. Post internship debriefing, especially conducted according to pedagogically grounded models, can facilitate critical reappraisal of experiences and increase student satisfaction. Debriefing for Meaningful Learning (DML) is a structured model that promotes critical thinking, theory–practice integration and professional awareness. This study evaluated student satisfaction and the perceived quality of debriefing conducted according to the DML model using the DASH SV scale. Methods Following a literature review to examine the state of the art on post internship debriefing, a single center observational study with a pre experimental “one group post test only” design was carried out. The sample comprised 27 third year students enrolled in the Bachelor of Nursing programme at the Fermo campus. Four post internship debriefing sessions were conducted according to the DML model. At the end of each session, students completed the extended version of the DASH SV (Debriefing Assessment for Simulation in Healthcare, student version), validated in Italian. Means, standard deviations, inter dimension correlations and internal consistency (Cronbach’s α) were calculated. Results Scores indicate a very high level of satisfaction: the overall DASH SV mean was 6.40 (SD = 0.49), with item means ranging from 6.30 to 6.52. The dimension “Creating an engaging learning environment” obtained the highest score (M = 6.42), while “Structuring the debriefing” showed slightly lower values (M = 6.36), remaining within excellent range. The internal consistency of the scale was very high (α = 0.94). Correlations among dimensions (0.82–0.91) indicate a coherent and integrated perception of the debriefing process. Discussion The results indicate that the DML model was perceived by students as highly effective and satisfactory. The high score for the learning environment dimension confirms the importance of psychological safety as a prerequisite for active participation and critical reflection. Comparison with the literature shows that the obtained scores are consistent with, and in some cases higher than, those reported in similar studies, suggesting that DML is a valid and replicable model for post internship debriefing. Despite the small sample and the absence of a control group, the findings provide useful indications for optimizing tutoring practices and for the systematic integration of structured debriefing into educational pathways.

Abstract
Introduction Clinical internships are a central component of nursing education, but to translate experience into meaningful learning a structured reflective process is required. Post internship debriefing, especially conducted according to pedagogically grounded models, can facilitate critical reappraisal of experiences and increase student satisfaction. Debriefing for Meaningful Learning (DML) is a structured model that promotes critical thinking, theory–practice integration and professional awareness. The high score for the learning environment dimension confirms the importance of psychological safety as a prerequisite for active participation and critical reflection.
