Introduction The Nursing Degree Program at the Polytechnic University of Marche (UNIVPM) in Ancona currently places grater emphasis on technical and theoretical competencies than on emotional and relational aspects of nursing care. Understending emotional intelligence (EI) among nursing students may rappresent an important step in assesing the need for its further integration into nursing education. Aim To explore and analyze the perception and knowledge of emotional intelligence among nursing students at the Polytechnic University of Marche in Ancona throughout their three-year academic program. Method The study combined a review of the biomedical literature with qualitative ethnographic research. The ethnographic component included the administration of anonymous paper-based questionnaires and participant observation conducted by the researcher during nursing classes at UNIVPM in Ancona. The study sample consisted of first-, second- and third-year nursing students attending the observed lessons. Risults A total of 227 nursing students from the Ancona campus of UNIVPM partecipeted in the study. Although students demonstreted a partial understanding of emotional intelligence, they showed limited knowledge regarding the ways emotionally intelligent individuals manage and resolve conflicts. Partecipants recognized the positive emotional, relational, professional and personal implications of EI, however, they were less aware of the accademic benefits reported in the literature. While previous studies highlight a lack of formal training in emotional intelligence within nursing curricula, the ethnographic findings revealed attention to this topic at the Ancona campus, despite the fact that EI was never explicity mentionated during the nursing lessons observeted by the research. Conclusions The perception and knowledge of EI among nursing students at the Ancona campus are generally adequate, but could be futher enhanced. The findings suggest the need to develop and implement more effective teaching methodologies aimed at strengthening EI competencies. Adopting a holistic educational approach that acknowledges the importance of emotions and EI is not only an educational responsibility, but also an investiment in the future of healthcare and society as a whole.
