The sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus) is a widely distributed species, but many aspects of the migratory movements of males remain poorly understood. The aim of this thesis was to analyse the behaviour of sperm whales using bioacoustics, to investigate any correlations between photo-identification catalogues, and to assess the effectiveness of sighting data in describing the presence of the species in the waters off northern Iceland. This thesis takes the form of a case study on this topic, as it involved listening to recordings made over the course of a week during which it was already known that sperm whales would be present. Analysis of the recordings revealed the presence of usual clicks and creaks, indicating that the sperm whales in the area were primarily engaged in feeding activities and that acoustic activity was more frequent during the night. A comparison of the photographic catalogues from Iceland, Norway and the Azores did not reveal any definite matches between individuals. Furthermore, a comparison of recordings and sightings showed that the presence of sperm whales in the area was more widespread than suggested by visual data alone. The results demonstrate that the integration of bioacoustics, photo-identification and sighting data allows for a more comprehensive description of the presence of sperm whales in the area than the use of a single method.

Abstract

Characterising the acoustic behaviour of sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) in Skjálfandi Bay, Iceland
