The northern coast of Vietnam is an area of high ecological and socio-economic importance that is increasingly affected by urbanization, industrial development, port activities and tourism. The aim of this thesis was to provide an integrated environmental characterization of the Hai Phong–Quang Ninh coastal system through the analysis of water physicochemical parameters, sediment geochemistry and living benthic foraminiferal assemblages, while evaluating their potential as bioindicators of environmental quality. Field sampling was conducted in September 2025 along a 200 km coastal transect in the Gulf of Tonkin, including ten stations distributed across open coastal, karst and estuarine environments. The results revealed marked environmental gradients driven by freshwater inputs, hydrodynamic conditions and anthropogenic activities. Mercury concentrations in the water column exceeded Vietnamese regulatory thresholds at all stations, while cadmium, lead and mercury exceeded the corresponding European environmental quality standards. In contrast, sediment metal concentrations remained below both Vietnamese and European guideline values. Living benthic foraminiferal assemblages showed clear spatial differentiation in response to local environmental conditions, confirming their sensitivity to ecological gradients. Ecological quality assessment indicated predominantly moderate to poor conditions throughout the study area, with Ha Long Bay representing the most environmentally impacted sector. Overall, this study provides an updated assessment of the environmental status of the northern Vietnamese coast and confirms the potential of benthic foraminifera as effective bioindicators for integrated coastal environmental monitoring while highlighting the need for region-specific ecological indices for tropical ecosystems.

Abstract
Overall, this study provides an updated assessment of the environmental status of the northern Vietnamese coast and confirms the potential of benthic foraminifera as effective bioindicators for integrated coastal environmental monitoring while highlighting the need for region-specific ecological indices for tropical ecosystems.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
