This thesis analyses the evolution of financial statement presentation rules, focusing on the replacement of IAS 1 (Presentation of Financial Statements) in favour of the new framework established by IFRS 18 (Presentation and Disclosure in Financial Statements). The paper examines the main innovations introduced by the standard, including a more defined structure of the Income Statement, the regulation of management-defined performance measures, and the key criteria for aggregating and disaggregating information. Moving from this regulatory framework, the investigation aims to assess ex ante the extent to which the transition from IAS 1 to IFRS 18 is expected to modify the structure of the Income Statement and the performance representation of the companies considered. To this end, an empirical analysis was developed on a sample of ten companies included in the FTSE MIB index, working on the consolidated financial statements for the 2025 financial year and the related explanatory notes. Based only on publicly available information, the effects of the new classification rules, the determination of mandatory subtotals, and the presentation of operating expenses were simulated on the consolidated financial statements of the companies in the sample. The results highlight the absence of uniform deviations across the sample, with variations remaining strictly dependent of the business model, the structure of the Income Statement, and the level of detail of the available disclosures.

Abstract

From IAS 1 to IFRS 18: an ex ante analysis of changes in performance representation
