This thesis examines the role of sustainability information in the dialogue between banks and small and medium-sized enterprises, with particular reference to SMEs that are not subject to the sustainability reporting requirements established by the CSRD. After outlining the European regulatory framework and the main reporting standards, the study analyses how ESG factors are incorporated into credit processes and considers the instruments designed to structure the exchange of information, including the VSME Standard and the Document for Sustainability Dialogue between SMEs and Banks. The empirical investigation, based on a case study of BPER Banca and questionnaires submitted to its ESG Evolution & Reporting Office, shows that ESG information complements credit assessment without replacing the evaluation of creditworthiness. The findings also highlight the need for proportionate, comparable and reliable data, as well as the usefulness of standardised instruments in reducing the reporting burden on SMEs. Challenges remain concerning fragmented information requests, the quality of voluntarily disclosed data and its verification. The thesis concludes that sustainability dialogue can improve banks’ understanding of businesses and support their transition, provided that it forms part of a consistent, proportionate and verifiable information process.
