Deep-sea bottom trawling can alter sediment habitats, food resources and benthic biodiversity. Mitigation measures may reduce physical disturbance, but the extent of subsequent biological recovery remains uncertain. This study investigated changes in nematode assemblages in La Fonera Canyon (Northwestern Mediterranean) between 2011 and 2024, spanning the replacement of traditional trawling otter boards with less disruptive alternatives, completed in 2017. The 2024 survey revisited the same thirteen stations sampled in 2011 and reported by Pusceddu et al. (2014), comprising trawled sediments at 500 m and untrawled sediments at 500, 800 and 2000 m. Two replicates per station were analysed, consistent with the earlier study. Taxonomic diversity, community composition, trophic diversity, ecological maturity and individual biomass were examined. Temporal comparisons were conducted at genus level to ensure consistent taxonomic resolution. Differences among conditions and years were assessed using PERMANOVA, supported by dispersion tests, pairwise comparisons, CAP ordinations and SIMPER analyses. Genera richness, Shannon, Margalef, and expected species number diversity indexes increased significantly in trawled sediments at 500 m between 2011 and 2024. Some diversity increases also occurred in untrawled sediments, indicating broader temporal variation. Community composition changed between years but trawled and untrawled assemblages at 500 m remained significantly different despite a numerical reduction in average dissimilarity. Diversity gains in trawled sediments were not accompanied by significant increases in trophic diversity or the Maturity Index. Mean individual biomass was lower in 2024, although heterogeneous dispersion limited interpretation of the temporal statistical comparison. Overall, the findings are consistent with partial recovery of taxonomic diversity following mitigation under continued fishing activity, without demonstrating uniform recovery across community attributes. Integrating taxonomic and functional indicators with environmental monitoring is therefore important for evaluating benthic recovery and informing sustainable management of deep-sea fisheries.
