Abstract

This dissertation analyses experimental data achieved through the empirical testing of the coupling of a Kaplan turbine, which is part of a mini-hydroelectric plant. It aims at finding the configuration of the best stator and rotor blades to maximize efficiency and minimize the variation of the output power. The first chapter explores the environmental problems related to climatic change, contextualizing the potential of zero impact plants in the present day. In 2021, we can consider renewables sources as fundamental to minimize the damages caused by the ever-increasing demand for electrical power and, consequently, to preserve our planet. This chapter mainly focuses on the hydroelectric industry, which is the field of application of this work, and on its evolution in the Italian context. Finally, are investigated the general characteristics of a hydroelectric plant with a Kaplan turbine. The second chapter introduces the plant from which the data was obtained and its peculiarities. Moreover, it describes the features of its location and the optimal conditions for its functioning. The third chapter examines how the analysis has been carried out and explains how the data range of interest varies according to the reference climatic period. After this, it explains the remote-control system used and how it can be employed to draw manually the coupling curve. In the end, it resumes how the tests have been carried out and their related time frames. The fourth chapter examines the processed data with their related examples. It contains summary tables of the processed data and discusses how they can be employed, completing the experiment. In the end, it reports the final results and the related observations. Last, this dissertation draws the conclusions of the work, explaining the limits of this experiment, and the possible future evolutions of this investigation, together with how it could be, hopefully, improved.
